Tin từ Miami/Philadelphia – Trong buổi nói chuyện với cử tri trên đài truyền hình NBC và ABC hôm thứ Năm (15 tháng 10), ứng cử viên đảng Dân chủ Joe Biden chỉ trích phản ứng “hoảng sợ” của tổng thống Trump trước đại dịch coronavirus, trong khi tổng thống bảo vệ cách ông giải quyết cuộc khủng hoảng đã khiến hơn 217,000 người Mỹ tử vong.

Phát biểu trước các cử tri ở Philadelphia, ông Biden cáo buộc tổng thống Trump đã cố gắng che đậy mối nguy hiểm của coronavirus. Tổng thống Trump đã bảo vệ cả phản ứng của ông đối với đại dịch cũng như hành vi cá nhân của mình, kể cả việc tổ chức một sự kiện ở Vườn Hồng của Tòa Bạch Ốc, sự kiện mà chỉ có một số người đeo khẩu trang hay thực hiện khoảng cách xã hội, khiến nhiều người tham dự nhiễm virus.

Tổng thống Trump nói rằng ông “đã nghe nhiều câu chuyện khác nhau” về độ hiệu quả của khẩu trang, mặc dù các chuyên gia y tế công cộng của chính quyền của ông đã nói rằng đeo khẩu trang là chìa khóa để ngăn chặn virus lây lan. Tổng thống từ chối lên án QAnon, thuyết âm mưu sai sự thật cho rằng đảng Dân chủ là một phần của tổ chức ấu dâm toàn cầu, ông đã ca ngợi những người phản đối nạn ấu dâm trước khi nói rằng ông không biết phong trào này.

Tổng thống Trump cũng né tránh các câu hỏi về cuộc điều tra của New York Times về hai thập niên khai thuế của ông, mà ông đã từ chối công khai. Theo Dự án Bầu cử Hoa Kỳ của Đại học Florida, đến nay đã có khoảng 18.3 triệu người Hoa Kỳ bỏ phiếu trực tiếp hoặc qua đường bưu điện.

Các cử tri đang đi bầu sớm để tránh xếp hàng bầu cử trực tiếp vào Ngày Bầu cử, để giữ an toàn khi số ca nhiễm coronavirus và nhập viện tiếp tục tăng, nhưng cũng để bảo đảm lá phiếu của họ sẽ được đếm. Nhiều người lo ngại tổng thống Trump sẽ gây khó dễ cho các phiếu bầu gửi qua bưu điện, sau khi ông nhiều lần tuyên bố rằng cách thức bầu cử này gian lận mà không đưa ra bằng chứng

California will likely never turn “red,” and the rest of the country will slowly turn “blue” over time.

That’s not because of some “greater truth” that liberals have that conservatives don’t. It’s not about ideology at all. It’s about urbanization.

Currently the Democratic party is, by and large, the party of big cities. People who live in large groups which are packed relatively densely have different interests and concerns than people who are more spread out.

Probably the easiest place to see this is with gun legislation. If you live where you can go hunting, or where you’re likely to see wild animals bigger than a squirrel or raccoon, you’re likely to own a gun. It’s a useful tool. Yay, guns! ;-)

If you live somewhere where it’s difficult to find a place to go shooting—no open land, few shooting ranges—you’re less likely to own a gun, even if you want one.

And if you live where there are 200 homes in your building, any two or three of which may house some crazy person, you’re more likely to want to be sure THEY don’t have a gun. Multiply that by 100,000 and you can see why the “big city liberals” worry about gun control. (You don’t have to agree, but you should at least be able to see where they are coming from.)

The fact is, the population of our country is growing. California has about 38.8 million of our country’s 318.9 million residents. That’s about 12% of the nation’s population. Over time, it’s only going to get bigger, and they’re not making any more real estate. People will inevitably live closer and closer together.

Urban and suburban areas will grow, and rural areas will shrink. Chino, California used to be the largest source of dairy in the United States (yes, more than Wisconsin). Over the last 20 years, much of the farmland there has been converted to urban uses. Chino’s current 20–year “vision statement” doesn’t mention dairy or farming at all. Fortunately for farmers, the CDC recognizes some of the farmland to the south and east as “critical farmland” that must be protected.

This is happening all over the country. Look at populations trends over the last 20 years and you can see the spread of cities and the retreat of rural areas. The “blue,” if you will, is spreading.

You won’t see it on a blue/red map right away, but you can see it if you look at a population density map. Pick a certain number of residents per square mile, and watch that density spread over time.

As we saw in this election, the Electoral College is what keeps the populous places from overwhelming the least-populous places. That’s why Trump could lose the popular election by a huge margin, but still win the electoral vote. Small states are vastly overrepresented in the Electoral College, because the alternative is to have them entirely swept away by the vast majority.

Whether this is a good thing or not, of course, depends on where you live. ;-)
