Là nơi tiếp nhận gần 6.250 tấn rác mỗi ngày, Bantar Gebang đã trở thành một bãi rác khổng lồ cách thủ đô Jakarta 30km về phía đông. Đây cũng là nơi kiếm sống của 2.000 gia đình với công việc chính là nhặt và tái chế rác. Được biết, trung bình những người bới rác kiếm ở Bantar Gebang mỗi ngày kiếm được khoảng 30.000 rupiah (khoảng 70.000 đồng)– hoặc hơn nếu họ nhặt được các thứ như điện thoại di động, đồ trang sức hoặc ngoại tệ.
