Vietnam has confirmed 5,149 more coronavirus cases in 23 cities and provinces across the country during the past 12 hours, with most cases recorded in the south, reported the Ministry of Health (MoH) on August 10 morning.

As many as 5,144 cases were locally acquired and five cases were diagnosed upon their returning from overseas, the MoH said in its 06.00am coronavirus update.

Of the total, 662 cases were uncovered in residential areas or through random testing, while the rest were documented in quarantine or lockdown areas.

Most of the locally acquired infections were detected in southern provinces, with Ho Chi Minh City, the country’s largest coronavirus hotspot, registering 2,490 cases.

Binh Duong, another coronavirus hotspot which is an industrial complex hub and a gateway to HCM City, recorded 1,325 cases.

Other southern localities registering high numbers of new infections include Dong Nai 354, Long An 313, Ba Ria – Vung Tau 109, Tay Ninh 102, and Tien Giang 100.

Several cases were sporadically detected in other localities such as Phu Yen, Gia Lai, Hai Duong, and Hanoi capital.

Earlier, on August 9 evening the MoH announced 9,340 new cases and 4,423 recoveries logged in the previous 24 hours.

As of 06.00am on August 10 Vietnam has recorded 220,957 new cases following the resurgence of the virus in late April, and 222,527 cases since the start of the first outbreak in the country in January 2020.
