HARTFORD, Connecticut (NV) – Thiếu Tướng Lê Minh Đảo, cựu tư lệnh Sư Đoàn 18 Bộ Binh QLVNCH, vừa qua đời tại bệnh viện Hartford, Connecticut, lúc 1 giờ 45 phút chiều (giờ địa phương) hôm Thứ Năm, 19 Tháng Ba, hưởng thọ 87 tuổi.




Tin này được cô Lê Bích Phượng, ái nữ của thiếu tướng, xác nhận với nhật báo Người Việt.

Cô cho biết, vị thiếu tướng ra đi b́nh yên trong lúc có gia đ́nh con cháu nội ngoại tề tựu xung quanh.


Theo Lược Sử QLVNCH của ba tác giả Trần Ngọc Thống, Hồ Đắc Huân, và Lê Đ́nh Thụy, vị thiếu tướng tư lệnh Sư Đoàn 18 sinh ngày 5 Tháng Ba, 1933, tại xă B́nh Ḥa, quận G̣ Vấp, tỉnh Gia Định.

Ông có chín người con, hai trai và bảy gái.

Hồi chưa vào quân đội, ông là học sinh trường Lyceé Pétrus Kư, Sài G̣n, rồi tốt nghiệp tú tài I và II.

Sau đó, ông theo học khóa 10 Trần B́nh Trọng trường Vơ Bị Liên Quân Đà Lạt ngày 1 Tháng Mười, 1953.

Một năm sau, ông măn khóa với cấp bậc thiếu úy, nhưng được giữ lại trường.

Năm 1954, ông được chọn đi học lớp huấn luyện viên tại trường Vơ Bị Lục Quân Fort Benning, Columbus, Georgia, Mỹ.
Năm 1956, ông được thăng trung úy.

Sau đó, ông trở lại trường Vơ Bị Liên Quân Đà Lạt, giữ chức đại đội trưởng sinh viên sĩ quan, huấn luyện viên các khóa 13, 14, và 15.

Năm 1960, ông là tùy viên của Thiếu Tướng Lê Văn Kim.

Năm 1962, ông mang cấp đại úy, được đi du học lớp Tác Chiến Rừng Rậm tại Malaysia.

Năm 1963, ông phục vụ tại Khối Nghiên Cứu của Bộ Tư Lệnh Hành Quân.

Ngày 2 Tháng Mười Một, 1963, ông được thăng thiếu tá tạm thời, và đến cuối năm làm tỉnh trưởng tỉnh Long An.

Cuối năm 1964, ông bàn giao chức tỉnh trưởng cho Thiếu Tá Nguyễn Văn Lộc, và đến đầu năm 1965 ông làm tiểu đoàn trưởng Tiểu Đoàn 1, Trung Đoàn 31, Sư Đoàn 21 Bộ Binh. Sau đó, ông làm trung đoàn phó Trung Đoàn 31.

Năm 1966, ông là giám đốc Trung Tâm Hành Quân Quân Đoàn IV.

Một năm sau, ông làm tỉnh trưởng tỉnh Chương Thiện, và đến năm 1968 được thăng cấp trung tá nhiệm chức ngay tại mặt trận.

Cuối Tháng Hai, 1969, ông bàn giao chức tỉnh trưởng cho Trung Tá Nguyễn Văn Ngưu để về làm tỉnh trưởng kiêm tiểu khu trưởng Định Tường.

Năm 1970, ông được thăng đại tá nhiệm chức đặc cách tại mặt trận.

Tháng Ba, 1972, ông lại bàn giao chức vụ hiện tại cho Đại Tá Chung Văn Bông, và ngày 4 Tháng Tư làm tư lệnh Sư Đoàn 18 Bộ Binh thay Thiếu Tướng Lâm Quang Thơ.

Ngày 1 Tháng Mười Một, 1972, ông được vinh thăng chuẩn tướng nhiệm chức tại mặt trận.

Ngày 1 Tháng Ba, 1974, ông được vinh thăng chuẩn tướng thực thụ.

Ngày 24 Tháng Tư, 1975, ông được vinh thăng thiếu tướng nhiệm chức đặc cách tại mặt trận Xuân Lộc.

Trong những ngày cuối của cuộc chiến Việt Nam ông là người chỉ huy Sư Đoàn 18 Bộ Binh với chiến tích chặn đứng Cộng Quân vào Xuân Lộc, từ đó, ông có biệt danh “Người Hùng Xuân Lộc.”

Sau đó, ông bị tù Cộng Sản cho tới ngày 5 Tháng Năm, 1992.

Tháng Tư, 1993, ông định cư tại tiểu bang Virginia, Mỹ, và sau này chuyển về sống ở tiểu bang Connecticut.
