Chính quyền Mỹ khẳng định rằng sẽ tiến hành tịch thu hộ chiếu của những công dân c̣n nợ thuế, cho dù họ ở trong nước hay ngoài nước. Động thái giúp chính quyền thu thuế đối với rất nhiều người dân c̣n nợ.

Hăng tin UPI ngày 14-8, dẫn tuyên bố của Sở Thuế vụ liên bang Mỹ (IRS) cho biết sẽ phối hợp với Bộ Ngoại giao để thúc đẩy thực hiện Luật chấn chỉnh giao thông vận tải mặt đất Mỹ.

Đạo luật cho phép chính phủ liên bang từ chối cấp hoặc thu hồi hộ chiếu của những công dân nợ trên 52.000 USD tiền thuế.

Thật ra IRS và Bộ Ngoại giao Mỹ đă được phép làm điều này từ tháng 1-2018, nhưng bây giờ mới đẩy mạnh thực hiện.

"Mục đích của chúng tôi là nhắc nhở mọi người rằng chương tŕnh này vẫn đang có hiệu lực" -người phát ngôn Cecilia Barreda của IRS nói. Trước khi chuyển tiếp hồ sơ lên Bộ Ngoại giao, IRS sẽ cảnh báo người nợ thuế và họ sẽ có 30 ngày để phản hồi nếu không muốn mất hộ chiếu.

Khoảng 400.000 người nợ thuế trên 52.000 USD đă nhận được cảnh báo vào năm ngoái. Nhưng đến tháng 1-2019, chỉ 200 người trong số đó đă thanh toán nợ và 1.400 người đồng ư chi trả.

IRS cho phép người dân trả nợ thuế theo nhiều cách, gồm thanh toán toàn bộ một lần hay trả góp.

Một số trường hợp cũng sẽ được xem xét riêng như những người bị phá sản, sống trong khu vực được tuyên bố thảm họa, là nạn nhân của trộm thông tin liên quan đến thuế… Trong khi đó, những người phục vụ trong vùng chiến sự ở nước ngoài sẽ được ngoại lệ.

Tuy nhiên, giới chuyên gia lo ngại sự thay đổi có thể gây rắc rối cho những người Mỹ ở nước ngoài, đặc biệt là các expat (công dân Mỹ sinh sống và làm việc ở nước ngoài).

"Lo lắng lớn nhất của chúng tôi là nếu khách hàng của chúng tôi ở nước ngoài được gửi thư thông báo nhưng không đọc được và hộ chiếu của họ bị hủy. Sẽ dễ xảy ra việc họ trở về Mỹ và tại biên giới, họ phát hiện hộ chiếu của ḿnh đă bị hủy và cách duy nhất để lấy lại hộ chiếu là trả nợ" - Đài CNBC dẫn lời luật sư Reaz Jafri nói.

Theo tui nọ thuê $ 52.000 con số này nhiều quá , phải nói là nếu nợ thuế từ $ 500 mà vẫn đi du lịch các nước ở quá 30 ngày hoặc 1 năm đi du lịch 2 lân tước passport 10 năm cho lần đầu tái phạm...

có tiền đi du lịch ,chứ không chịu trả tiền thiếu thuế tịch thu passport là đúng,như vậy là mấy bác ai thiếu thuế nên lo trả trước khi đi vn thăm bồ nhí
