The family of Tommy Le, a 20-year-old Vietnamese man shot and killed by the police in 2017, is compensated $ 5 million after 4 years of lawsuit.

Tommy Le's family on 24/3 said it would receive $ 5 million in settlement money from the King County police office, Washington state. The settlement was announced almost a week before the case went to federal court. Le's family wants to receive $ 10 million in damages in the 2018 lawsuit.

"It is the pain that is deeply rooted in my family every day, nothing can be changed," said Sunny Le, Tommy's father. "I want my son to live again." Le, 20, is about to graduate from high school when he was shot dead in Burien in June 2017. Police arrived after a neighbor called 911, reported Le was acting abnormally, pounded on the door and threatened them with a knife.

Officer Cesar Molina was the third policeman to be present at the scene and opened fire in less than two minutes. Initially, this officer claimed that he opened fire in self-defense because Le used a knife to attack. However, no knives were found at the scene. A week later, the police office withdrew its statement, saying that Le had only held a ballpoint pen.

Investigators said Le's body had a small amount of the hallucinogenic drug LSD, unarmed. Le's family spent four years fighting and exposing the truth that the King County police were hiding.

Jeff Campiche, the family's lawyer, said the witness saw Le held nothing in his hand when he was killed. The pen found at the scene is also used in the police office, suggesting it could be left at the scene as evidence, the lawyer said.

The biggest evidence in support of the Le family's lawsuit was the location where he was shot. An autopsy showed Le hit two bullets in the back, one in the wrist. This questioned how he was able to intimidate the police when he was most likely turning away. Le's family lawyer said the results of the autopsy were not included in the investigation file.

"The King County Sheriff's Office concealed the truth by ignoring, concealing, giving false statements, even forging evidence," Campiche said. "This settlement has brought justice to Tommy Le, is the truth of what happened".

Attorney Campiche said it is worth mentioning in the case that the local police's habit of hiding has become endemic. "That's why our streets are filled with citizens who demand transparency, accountability and policy reform."

The settlement follows a report from the Law Enforcement Office released last September, highlighting the police office's "insufficient factual record, lack of forensic evidence during review". after Le's death.

Dow Constantine, head of King County, hopes "the settlement brings peace to Le's family and the community. This tragedy underscores the need to scrutinize law enforcement policies and procedures. look at when the police are involved in a death case ".
