Nhiệt độ lạnh kèm theo gió to làm nước biển ở Na Uy đóng băng nhanh chóng khiến hàng ngh́n con cá bị mắc kẹt trong băng. Nước biển thông thường sẽ đóng băng ở nhiệt độ -1,9 độ C. Trong khi đó theo truyền thông Na Uy, nhiệt độ được ghi nhận vào thời điểm 11/1 xuống thấp ở mức -7,8 độ C.

Nhiệt độ xuống thấp cùng với tác động của một cơn gió đông mạnh đă nước trong vùng vịnh ở đảo Lovund nhanh chóng đóng băng. Khi bơi vào vùng nước này, đàn cá trích cũng bị đóng băng trong nước.

Aril Slotte, một chuyên gia của Viện Nghiên cứu Hải dương Na Uy, cho biết đàn cá trích có thể đă bị chim cốc, loài chim thường ăn cá này, săn đuổi và dồn vào vùng nước nông. Nếu có thể trốn ở những vùng nước sâu và ấm hơn, đàn cá đă có thể thoát khỏi nguy cơ bị đóng băng.

Trước đó một tuần, một con nai sừng tấm cũng bị mắc kẹt trong nước và bị đóng băng ở hồ Kosmo, phía bắc Na Uy. Theo các chuyên gia, t́nh h́nh thời tiết bất ổn như nhiệt độ xuống thấp đột ngột là một trong những nguyên nhân khiến các loài động vật chết hàng loạt.
