Thông tin đầy đủ về Covid-19 vẫn chưa đến được hầu hết người Mỹ. Scott Isaacs là bác sĩ nội tiết trong hơn hai thập kỷ ở Atlanta, nhiều tuần qua điện thoại của ông reo liên tục bởi bệnh nhân hỏi "tôi phải làm ǵ".

Công việc của bác sĩ Scott 20 năm qua là chữa trị cho các bệnh nhân lớn tuổi mắc tiểu đường ở khu vực Atlanta. Ông chưa từng tưởng tượng một ngày, ḿnh sẽ chiến đấu trên tuyến đầu chống đại dịch.

Nhiều tuần liền, điện thoại của ông reo liên tục. Các bệnh nhân tiểu đường - đối tượng có nguy cơ cao mắc Covid-19 muốn biết: Làm thế nào để được xét nghiệm? Dự trữ thuốc ra sao? Liệu ông có thể viết thư đến công ty đề xuất cho tôi làm việc tại nhà hay không?

Tuần trước, bác sĩ Isaacs đă gặp một y tá đang mang thai, cũng là bệnh nhân tiểu đường tuưp 1. Cô hỏi ḿnh nên ở nhà bao lâu để tránh lây nhiễm, ông thành thực nói: "Tôi thật sự không có câu trả lời".

Bác sĩ Isaacs vốn quen với việc chữa bệnh dựa trên kiến thức chuyên khoa. Song dịch bệnh bùng phát bất ngờ đưa ông đến một lĩnh vực mới, chia sẻ trải nghiệm cùng nhiều chuyên gia y tế khác, làm việc như một bác sĩ chính của các bệnh nhân Covid-19 cần chăm sóc đặc biệt.

Rất nhiều người được đào tạo để xử lư các triệu chứng đặc thù và cố gắng bắt kịp diễn biến từ dịch bệnh theo tư vấn của chính phủ và các cơ quan y tế.

"Chúng tôi nghe được nỗi lo lắng từ các chuyên gia, những người chưa biết phải làm ǵ đối với bệnh nhân của ḿnh. Bác sĩ da liễu, bác sĩ nhăn khoa hay thậm chí cả các nha sĩ", tiến sĩ Megan Ranney, một bác sĩ cấp cứu ở Rhode Island cho biết.

Tiến sĩ Sandra Weber, Chủ tịch Hiệp hội Bác sĩ Nội tiết Lâm sàng Mỹ nhận định, sự bùng phát của Covid-19 đă lập tức cho thấy người dân nước này phụ thuộc nhiều vào các chuyên gia y tế đến thế nào. Không phải ai cũng có bác sĩ cá nhân. Nhiều người dân không thường xuyên đến gặp bác sĩ nội khoa hoặc bác sĩ gia đ́nh.

Khi cảm thấy lo lắng, họ có xu hướng gọi cho chuyên gia liên quan đến bệnh lư cụ thể ḿnh đang có. Các bác sĩ tim mạch, phổi hay phụ sản được cho là rất phù hợp để tư vấn cho bệnh nhân về Covid-19. Song những người ở chuyên khoa khác gặp nhiều khó khăn khi lắng nghe câu hỏi họ không thường giải đáp trước đây.

Tiến sĩ Weber hỗ trợ bệnh nhân bằng cách cung cấp thêm thuốc men pḥng trường hợp họ phải tự cách ly. Trong khi đó các bác sĩ tâm thần, đặc biệt là tại các khu học xá phải đối mặt với hàng loạt câu hỏi như đường lây nhiễm tiềm năng của virus. Khối lượng công việc, lịch học của họ cũng dày hơn.

Đối với Gauri Khurana, một bác sĩ tâm thần chủ yếu làm việc với sinh viên đại học, các câu hỏi liên quan đến Covid-19 khiến cô gặp nhiều khó khăn. Sinh viên có xu hướng lo lắng về yêu cầu tốt nghiệp hoặc sức khỏe cá nhân, liệu họ có khả năng mắc bệnh hay không.

"Tôi không nghĩ nhiều người trong số họ có bác sĩ cá nhân và ở thời điểm này, mọi người đều hoảng loạn, tự hỏi điều ǵ sẽ xảy ra. Có những bệnh nhân muốn bỏ học, chuyển đến Canada. Họ cảm thấy biết ơn đối với bất cứ lời khuyên nào, đặc biệt là từ một bác sĩ bởi giờ có quá nhiều thông tin sai lệch", cô nói.

Chính v́ vậy tiến sĩ Khurana liên tục đọc các bài báo về nCoV, cố gắng hết sức để tư vấn cho các bệnh nhân của ḿnh. Một số phương án được đề xuất bao gồm sử dụng thẻ tín dụng thay v́ tiền mặt, đeo găng tay khi đi ra ngoài, mang theo vật dụng cá nhân...

Tiến sĩ Rajeev Jain, một bác sĩ chuyên khoa tiêu hóa ở Dallas đă điều trị cho lượng lớn bệnh nhân bị rối loạn tự miễn dịch. Để giảm thiểu nguy cơ lây nhiễm cho họ, Jain đă huỷ bỏ một số buổi hẹn khám không cần thiết. Phần lớn thời gian ông trả lời các cuộc gọi từ bệnh nhân. Nhiều người thắc mắc liệu họ có nên ngừng sử dụng thuốc ức chế miễn dịch hay không. Sau khi tham khảo lời khuyên chung từ các hiệp hội tiêu hoá Mỹ, bác sĩ Jain cho rằng bệnh nhân nên tiếp tục điều trị b́nh thường.

Ông lo lắng nếu ngừng dùng thuốc, bệnh nhân có thể nhiễm các bệnh khác và phải nhập viện.

"Hiện tại đó là nơi chứa nhiều virus nhất. Đây là điều cuối cùng mà tôi muốn làm", ông nói.

Khi các bác sĩ chuẩn bị tinh thần bước vào một giai đoạn ngày càng khó khăn, đại diện các hiệp hội y tế cho biết họ đang nhanh chóng phát triển và phân bổ các nguồn lực để hỗ trợ công tác điều trị cho bệnh nhân.

Patrice Harris, Chủ tịch Hiệp hội Y khoa Mỹ cho biết đơn vị này đă phát triển một trung tâm tài nguyên trực tuyến về Covid-19 nhằm hướng dẫn các bác sĩ. Bà cũng nói thêm rằng hiệp hội đă nhận thức được khó khăn c̣n tồn tại và cố gắng giải quyết t́nh trạng thiếu thiết bị bảo hộ, bao gồm khẩu trang N95.

Dịch bệnh quét qua, nhiều cơ sở y tế đối mặt với những vấn đề không thể lường trước. Bác sĩ Isaacs cho biết pḥng khám của ông đă 4 lần bị cướp khẩu trang, khăn diệt khuẩn và dung dịch khử trùng.

Trong khi đó, tiến sĩ Supriya Mahajan, chuyên gia thần kinh tại một pḥng khám tư nhân ở Ohio cho biết cô phải đối mặt với tổn thất tài chính khi chuyển hầu hết các cuộc hẹn khám trực tiếp sang điều trị từ xa.

Dù gặp nhiều khó khăn, hầu như các y bác sĩ vẫn đặt lợi ích của bệnh nhân lên trước.

"Tôi đă nhắc nhở bản thân về việc v́ sao ḿnh chọn ngành y tế ngay từ đầu. Tôi cần phải cố gắng và làm hết những ǵ có thể để giúp đỡ các bệnh nhân", tiến sĩ Rajeev Jain chia sẻ.

Ngày 29/3, Mỹ tiếp tục là vùng dịch lớn nhất với 123.313 ca nhiễm, 2.211 ca tử vong và 3.231 người hồi phục. Số ca tử vong ở Mỹ đă tăng gấp đôi chỉ trong ba ngày, bao gồm một trẻ sơ sinh ở thành phố Chicago. New York, Washington và California là ba bang chịu ảnh hưởng nặng nề nhất.
