Thủ tướng Đan Mạch cho biết Greenland không phải để bán và ư tưởng bán nó cho Mỹ là vô lư sau khi một cố vấn kinh tế cho Tổng thống Trump xác nhận sự quan tâm của Mỹ với đảo này.
"Greenland không phải để bán. Greenland không phải của Đan Mạch. Greenland thuộc về Greenland. Tôi rất hy vọng rằng họ không có ư nghiêm túc", Thủ tướng Đan Mạch Mette Frederiksen nói với báo Sermitsiaq trong chuyến thăm Greenland hôm 18/8.
Ông Trump dự kiến đến Copenhagen, thủ đô Đan Mạch, vào đầu tháng tới với chương tŕnh nghị sự bao gồm Bắc Cực trong các cuộc gặp với bà Frederiksen và Thủ hiến Kim Kielsen của Greenland, lănh thổ tự trị của Đan Mạch.

Hôm 18/8, ông Trump xác nhận với các phóng viên rằng ông gần đây đă thảo luận về khả năng mua đảo Greenland nhưng đây không phải là ưu tiên trước mắt. Ông nói việc mua lại ḥn đảo "về cơ bản giống như mua một món bất động sản rất lớn".
"Đó là cuộc thảo luận vô lư và Kim Kielsen dĩ nhiên đă nói rơ rằng Greenland không phải để bán. Cuộc đối thoại kết thúc ở đó", bà Frederiksen nói với đài truyền h́nh DR của Đan Mạch.
Hôm 16/8, Bộ trưởng Ngoại giao Greenland, Ane Lone Bagger, nói với Reuters: "Chúng tôi mở cửa kinh doanh nhưng chúng tôi không phải để bán".
Cố vấn kinh tế Nhà Trắng, ông Larry Kudlow, hôm 18/8 cũng xác nhận rằng ông Trump đă thảo luận riêng với các cố vấn về ư tưởng mua Greenland.
"Đan Mạch sở hữu Greenland, Đan Mạch là đồng minh, Greenland là một địa điểm chiến lược ở trên đó. Và họ có rất nhiều khoáng sản có giá trị", ông Kudlow nói thêm.
Một hiệp ước quốc pḥng giữa Đan Mạch và Mỹ từ năm 1951 trao cho quân đội Mỹ quyền đối với căn cứ không quân Thule ở phía bắc Greenland.
Greenland, nằm giữa Bắc Đại Tây Dương và Bắc Băng Dương, phụ thuộc vào hỗ trợ kinh tế của Đan Mạch. Họ tự xử lư các vấn đề nội bộ trong khi Copenhagen chịu trách nhiệm về chính sách quốc pḥng và đối ngoại.
