Được đóng từ những phiến gỗ của con tàu thám hiểm huyền thoại Resolute thuộc Hoàng gia Anh, chiếc bàn làm việc của Tổng thống Mỹ đến nay đă có lịch sử 139 năm.

Ngược ḍng thời gian, tháng 4/1852, Hoàng gia Anh phái 5 tàu (trong đó có Resolute), dưới sự chỉ huy của ông Edward Belcher tham gia sứ mệnh t́m con đường tắt để rút ngắn hải hành mậu dịch với phương Đông. Sau 2 năm lang thang, tàu Resolute và 3 tàu khác bị mắc kẹt bởi băng nổi. Ông Belcher ra lệnh thủy thủ trên 4 con tàu bị kẹt rời sang con tàu duy nhất không mắc nạn là North Star. Trước khi rời đi, Kellett (thuyền trưởng tàu Resolute) ra lệnh lau chùi sạch boong, khóa chặt cabin và kéo cao cờ rồi mới cùng thủy thủ trở về Anh trên chiếc North Star chật chội.

Tháng 9/1855, trong một chuyến săn cá voi, thuyền trưởng James Buddington của con tàu săn cá voi George Henry (Mỹ) phát hiện Resolute và mang nó về New London ( Connecticut).

Với ư định trả lại con tàu cho nước Anh, chính phủ Mỹ bỏ ra 40.000 USD để mua lại và tu sửa gần như t́nh trạng ban đầu. Tháng 11/1856, con tàu khởi hành từ New York để trở về nơi nó đă ra đi.

Hoạt động tại Anh gần 20 nữa th́ Resolute bị tháo rời (chắc do hết hạn sử dụng?). Nữ hoàng Victoria ra lệnh gỗ từ Resolute sẽ được dùng cho mục đích đặc biệt...

Ngày 23/11/1880, một thùng to được gửi đến Nhà Trắng, đề tên người nhận là Tổng thống Rutherford Hayes, bên trong là chiếc bàn gần 160 kg, cùng lời bày tỏ: “... Cái bàn này được làm từ gỗ con tàu Resolute và được nữ hoàng Vương quốc Anh dâng tặng tổng thống Hiệp chủng quốc Hoa Kỳ như là kỷ vật về tấm ḷng chân thật và sự lịch lăm...”.

Bàn Resolute được dùng trong văn pḥng tổng thống Mỹ tại Nhà Trắng từ năm 1902 dưới thời Theodore Roosevelt. Theo yêu cầu của nhà lănh đạo này, mặt trước của bàn được chạm thêm huy hiệu President. Đến thời Tổng thống Harry Truman, chiếc bàn được đặt trong pḥng phát thanh, nơi sau này Tổng thống Dwight Eisenhower dùng để đọc diễn văn radio và truyền h́nh.

Vào tháng 2/1961, phu nhân Tổng thống John F.Kennedy - bà Jacqueline - phát hiện chiếc bàn ở pḥng phát thanh và ra lệnh đưa nó trở về Pḥng Bầu dục. Sau khi Kennedy chết, bàn Resolute được chuyển đến Viện Smithsonian trước khi được Tổng thống Jimmy Carter đưa trở lại Pḥng Bầu dục năm 1977. Đến thời Tổng thống George H.Bush, chiếc bàn được chuyển về nhà riêng gia đ́nh Bush. Cuối cùng, sau khi nhậm chức năm 1993, Tổng thống Bill Clinton cho mang chiếc bàn trở về Pḥng Bầu dục, nơi nó tại vị cho đến ngày nay.

Chỉ là câu chuyện về một chiếc bàn nhưng thật thú vị và thẫm đẫm tinh thần nhân văn. Nước Mỹ "quyến rũ" từ thứ nhỏ nhặt như thế...
