Khi tôi nghĩ về một người Mỹ chân chính, tôi nghĩ về một người có cách cư xử tốt, đạo đức tốt, tính chính trực, trung thực, dũng cảm, nhân ái, rộng lượng và công bằng. Những người như thế chính là những người xây dựng lên nước Mỹ chúng ta được thừa hưởng hiện nay. Mặc dù họ không hoàn hảo cũng như nước Mỹ không hoàn hảo, họ có đủ tư cách và khả năng để xây dựng nước Mỹ thành một liên minh hoàn hảo và đoàn kết hơn.

Đó là lý do tại sao Mỹ, mặc dù gần đây đã lu mờ, vẫn là ngọn hải đăng mà thế giới đều nhìn lên, hy vọng cho những điều tốt đẹp và công băng.

Ông John McCain là tiêu biểu xuất sắc của những người Mỹ như vậy.

Sinh trong một dòng họ có truyền thống Hải Quân, ông John McCain tốt nghiệp Học Viện Hải Quân nổi tiếng của Hoa Kỳ, rồi thành phi công Hải quân.

Máy bay ông bị bắn rớt trong khi thi hành nhiệm vụ trên bầu trời Hà Nội vào năm 1967, và ông bị thương nặng. Ông đã bị giam cầm và tra tấn trong suốt 5 năm rưỡi. Vì cha của ông là chỉ huy trưởng của tất cả các lực lượng Hoa Kỳ ở Việt Nam, Bắc Việt Nam đề nghị thả ông sớm nhằm hỗ trợ tuyên truyền của họ, nhưng ông từ chối. Điều đó khiến ông ta bị đánh đập dã man hơn, đến độ ông đã sửa soạn kết liễu mạng sống.

Sau khi được bầu làm Thượng nghị sĩ, ông hợp tác với các Thượng nghị sĩ từng là cựu chiến binh Việt Nam: John Kerry, Chuck Hagel và Bob Kerrey để tạo thành cuộc đối thoại cấp quốc gia về bình thường hóa quan hệ với Việt Nam. Một mặt, ông thuyết phục chính phủ Việt Nam đóng các "trại cải tạo". Mặt khác, ông làm việc không mệt mỏi với các nhà lãnh đạo chính trị Mỹ để làm dịu lập trường của họ đối với Việt Nam.

The American I Love


On our 12 day caravan trip going through multiple States in early February, 2020, we drove across Arizona, I shared with the 2030 group, a young entrepreneur group, a personal hero of mine who lived here, the late Senator John McCain. He is undoubtedly the most positively impactful American to Vietnam, and uniquely occupied in the hearts of many Vietnamese inside and outside Vietnam. His God took him home on this date, 2 years ago.

When I think about a true American, I think about a person with good culture, high integrity, high moral, honesty, courage, compassion, generosity, and absolute fairness. People like those are the ones who have built the fabric of the America we come to know. They are not perfect just as America is not perfect. But they, with their characters, continue to build America to a more perfect and unified union. That is the reason why America, although dimmed in the near term, stayed the beacon everyone looked up to for justice and goodness.

John McCain was the epitome of such Americans.

Born into a family with navy's tradition, John McCain graduated from the famous Naval Academy then joined the Navy as pilot. His airplane was shot down while in 1967 from the sky of Hanoi, North Vietnam. He was badly injured and captured. He was imprisoned and severely tortured for five and a half years. Since his father was the commander of all US forces in Vietnam, North Vietnam offered him early release to prop up their propaganda, but he refused. That got him into more brutal beatings to the point he prepared to terminate his own life.

After the release, instead of hatred, he embraced the Vietnamese and became the most impactful American to the Vietnamese both in the country and outside of the country. After May 1975, the USA and Vietnam were adversaries. The US placed a complete embargo on Vietnam. Once McCain was elected to congress in 1982 as an Arizona Republican, he quickly went to work to establish US interest through the French Embassy in Hanoi. Since the country was still fresh from the Vietnam War wound, he was widely attacked for the idea but he was persistent. Once he was elected as Senator, he teamed up with fellow Vietnam veterans Senators: John Kerry, Chuck Hagel, and Bob Kerrey to shape the national conversation over normalizing relations with Vietnam. On one hand, he convinced the Vietnam government to shut down "re-education camps". On the other hand, he tirelessly worked with American political leaders to soften their stance on Vietnam.

As a result, the Vietnam embargo was lifted in 1994 literally transforming Vietnam's economic growth, opportunities, and living standard for ordinary people in Viet Nam. President Bill Clinton normalized relations with Vietnam in 1995. It created the foundations for many large Vietnamese corporations today, and opened the floodgate for Vietnamese students admitted to the US. The basis of the Vietnamese Capitalist system was formed. The comfort we take for comfort in Vietnam today can be traced back to those beginning times.

McCain went on to strengthen the educational ties between the US and Vietnam, through connecting American Universities with Vietnam's institutions, helping to create educational programs, then pushing legislation to fund these programs. The vibrant Fulbright University in Vietnam is one visible fruit of that effort. Mr Thomas J. Vallely, Chairman of Governing Board of Fulbright university, said: “Fulbright University encapsulates many of the things that John McCain stood for, It represents the idea of an open society and an open set of ideas without having to say you need to be exactly like the United States.”

Thanks to his clouts with the government of Vietnam, he was able to meet and provide support to Vietnam's political dissidents. He was responsible for the release of many of them including attorney Le Quoc Quan.

Many Vietnamese Americans owe Mr. John McCain for the reason they are in America today. He pushed a Humanitarian Operation with the Vietnamese government to allow the South Vietnamese officers and soldiers, who were badly imprisoned, and their family members to be resettled in the US. He crafted the amendment to provide refugee status for those to receive special privilege. He continued to be a great friend of Vietnamese until the day he died. Someday, I hope, the street of Vietnam will have his name.

For the Americans, he is an all American hero and a rare breed of politician who placed his country above his party, integrity above all. Millions of people have him to thank for the Affordable Care they have today, for his courageous act of saving it from being killed. His lifetime friendship with his political opponent is truly an American character that had been fading rapidly over the last few years.

This "Unlikely Friendship" video, as told by Cindy McCain, John McCain's wife, depicting the friendship and mutual admiration of each other's integrity, between John McCain, legendary Republican leader and Joe Biden, his opponent, a long lasting Democratic leader, is a reminder for all of us that even we may be on opposing ideological spectrum, as long as we agree that we strive to become a true American, agree that the goal is a better world for all, we should be able to agree on something, if we listen, understand, and compromise.
