Bóc lột sức lao động
Đó là khởi đầu ngày làm việc của hội thợ làm móng thành phố New York. Họ sẽ chỉ trở về nhà lúc tối muộn, sau 10 -12 tiếng làm việc.
Một buổi sáng giữa tháng 5.2015, cô gái Trung Quốc 20 tuổi tên Jing Ren lần đầu gia nhập hội thợ. Cô gói ghém theo ḿnh bữa trưa và bộ dụng cụ chuyên dùng của thợ làm móng. Trong túi cô là 100USD, phí để xin vào làm nhân viên ở salon. Cũng như những người khác, cô sẽ làm việc không công cho đến khi người chủ cho rằng cô đă đủ tŕnh độ và xứng đáng nhận lương. Jing sẽ mất khoảng 3 tháng để nhận được đồng lương đầu tiên, là 30USD mỗi ngày.
Cắt sửa móng tay đang trờ thành dịch vụ được ưa chuộng ở Mỹ. Cả nước này hiện có trên 17.000 tiệm làm móng. Con số này chỉ tính riêng ở New York là 2.000, tăng gấp 3 trong 15 năm qua.
Tuy nhiên, vấn nạn ít người biết đến, là việc những người thợ làm móng thường xuyên bị bóc lột sức lao động. Theo điều tra của tờ New York Times, phần lớn thợ làm móng phải nhận dưới mức lương tối thiểu, thậm chí là không lương. Họ bị ngược đăi theo nhiều cách, như cắt bớt tiền boa do những lỗi vụn vặt, liên tục bị theo dơi qua camera hay thậm chí là lạm dụng thể chất. Nhưng chủ salon lại không hề phải chịu trách nhiệm cho những hành động này.
Không khó để bắt gặp các mẩu quảng cáo tuyển nhân viên làm móng với mức lương ít ỏi đầy rẫy trên các tờ báo châu Á. Ṭa án New York thường xuyên phải tiếp nhận các vụ kiện về vi phạm quyền lao động, như chỉ được trả 1,5USD mỗi giờ, tuần làm việc 66 tiếng, bị tính tiền khi uống nước, ngày ế khách không được trả tiền hay bị chửi mắng và bạo hành khi đang làm việc. Trong số 100 nhân viên được phỏng vấn bởi New York Times, chỉ 25% cho biết họ nhận mức lương tương đương với mức tối thiểu ở New York, và hầu hết họ thừa nhận bị cắt tiền lương một cách bất hợp pháp.Điều kiện sống của những người thợ làm móng cũng vô cùng tệ hại. Họ tiếp xúc cả ngày với những quư bà sang trọng, tại những khu phố đắt đỏ bậc nhất New York. Nhưng khi rời khỏi vị trí làm việc, họ lại quay về với khu trọ lụp xụp, chật ních người.
Ren làm việc tại một salon cao cấp ở Hicksville, New York. Giống như nhưng thợ làm móng khác, cô có một bảng tên trên ngực với cái tên giả do chủ salon đặt cho là "Sherry". Cả ngày cô chỉ cặm cụi làm việc trong yên lặng, tẩy da chết hay loại bỏ vết chai quanh móng của khách hàng. Đêm xuống, cô trở về căn trọ chật chội, sống với bố con người chị họ và ba người lạ khác. Những chiếc giường chiếm trọn pḥng khách và căn bếp tối tăm đầy gián.
Các chủ salon luôn viện cớ cho việc ngược đăi nhân viên. Họ luôn ư thức được mức lương bèo bọt mà nhân viên của ḿnh nhận được. Chủ của Ren, ông Lian Sheng Shun, ban đầu phủ nhận những việc làm sai trái của ḿnh, nhưng sau đó lại đưa ra lư do rằng đó là cách làm kinh doanh riêng của họ. “Chúng tôi phả làm theo cách riêng của ḿnh để tồn tại buổi khó khăn này", ông bào chữa.
Mặt bằng giá cho dịch vụ cắt sửa móng phần nào giải thích cho mức lương ít ỏi của thợ sửa móng. Giá trung b́nh chỉ vào khoảng 10,5USD. "Nếu bạn tới chỗ nào đó và sử dụng dịch vụ với giá hời, chắc chắn lương công nhân ở đó đă bị cắt xén", Nicole Hallett, giảng viên Trường Luật Yale cho biết, "Chính thợ làm móng cho bạn là người phải chịu những chi phí đó".
Phân biệt đối xử
Dù vậy, một số chủ salon c̣n tuyên bố rằng chính ḿnh đang giúp đỡ dân nhập cư bằng cách cho họ việc làm. "Tôi muốn thay đổi số phận của dân nhập cư khỏi việc bị kỳ thị và sỉ nhục", Roger Liu, 28 tuổi, chủ salon Relaxing Town Nails Ở Huntington Station, New York cho biết. Cạnh đó, một nhân viên trên 50 tuổi đang đi đi lại lại trong cửa tiệm, lẩm nhẩm học thuộc các bước sửa móng chân được viết trong một mẩu giấy. Đó là tuần làm việc đầu tiên của bà ở đây, và Liu không trả cho bà một đồng nào.
Hầu hết thợ làm móng, giống như Ren, đều là dân nhập cư bất hợp pháp và chỉ biết bập bơm tiếng Anh. Điều này khiến họ luôn ở thế yếu. Một số nhân viên c̣n phải chịu cảnh cực khổ hơn, khi salon họ làm việc bị điều khiển bởi luật lệ riêng. Sau những ô kính lấp lánh đó là một xă hội phân chia giai cấp và phân biệt chủng tộc sâu sắc, ngay giữa ḷng New York phồn hoa.
Thợ làm móng Hàn Quốc kiếm được gấp đôi so vói các đồng nghiệp, bởi chủ các salon hầu hết là người Hàn Quốc. Tiếp đến là thợ Trung Quốc, c̣n thợ Tây Ban Nha, Bồ Đào Nha và các nước không thuộc châu Á khác luôn ở tầng đáy.
Thợ làm móng Hàn Quốc, đặc biệt nếu c̣n trẻ và xinh đẹp, thường kiếm được công việc mơ ước ở các salon cao quanh đại lộ Madison và những dân cư giàu có khác. Thợ làm móng từ các nước khác thường phải làm việc ở bên ngoài Manhattan, hay thậm chí là ngoại ô thành phố, những nơi luôn vắng khách và tiền boa ít ỏi.
Các chủ salon không ngại thể hiện sự thiên vị ra mặt. "Nhân viên người Tây Ban Nha, Bồ Đào Nha thường không thông minh và sạch sẽ như người Hàn Quốc", Mal Sung Noh, 68 tuổi, chủ tiệm làm móng Rose Nails ở phía đông thành phố cho biết. Cửa tiệm của bà Noh nằm ngay cạnh tuyến tàu điện ngầm đang thi công ở đại lộ Second. Có lẽ đó là lư do bà thuê nhiều nhân viên người Tây Ban Nha. Bà Noh thừa nhận ḿnh luôn trả mức lương thấp nhất cho những nhân viên này v́ "Họ chẳng bao giờ chịu học hỏi cả".
Sự phân biệt chủng tộc c̣n được thể hiện ở cách mà các thợ làm móng được đối xử. Một số khách hàng thậm chí c̣n không chịu để cho một nhân viên không phải là người Hàn Quốc phục vụ.
Lhamo Dolma, 39 tuổi, thợ làm móng người Tây Tạng, kể lại khoảng thời gian cô c̣n làm cho một salon ở Tây Tạng. Nhân viên Hàn Quốc th́ được ngồi ăn ở bàn, trong khi cô và các đồng nghiệp khác phải đứng ăn trong bếp. "Tại sao họ lại phân biệt đối xử giữa chúng tôi như vậy? Mọi người phải có quyền b́nh đẳng chứ", Dolma nhớ lại.
Phải làm việc nhiều giờ liền, cuộc sống của những người thợ làm móng gần như bị bó buộc sau bốn bức tường của các salon. V́ thế, vào các ngày trong tuần, sẽ có những người phụ nữ đi tới từng nhà và đưa con cái của những người thợ làm móng tới trường. Thợ làm móng phải trả cho những người này nửa số tiền lương để họ đưa đón và chăm sóc lũ trẻ, khi họ quá bận rộn v́ phải làm việc liên tục, kể cả vào ban đêm.
Ren phải ngủ trên một chiếc giường đơn chật hẹp. Cách đó vài bước chân là giường của chị họ cô, cũng là một thợ làm móng. Công việc bận rộn khiến Ren thậm chí c̣n không có thời gian để kết bạn.
Ren vừa bắt đầu học một lớp tiếng Anh, với hi vọng sẽ có được một cuộc sống tốt đẹp hơn. Nhưng cô luôn lo sẽ không dứt ra được. "Tôi thấy như chẳng c̣n chút sức sống nào vậy. Tôi e rằng ḿnh sẽ phải làm công việc này suốt quăng đời c̣n lại mất”, cô nói.

Ông,Cha ta đă có dạy :..."Nhất nghệ tinh...Nhất thân vinh"...nghề nào cũng cao quư không có ǵ là tủi nhục. Một người phu hốt rác lao động chân,tay...hoặc một kẻ làm việc ở văn pḥng máy nóng,lạnh đều ḥa,cũng đều có giá trị nhân cách ngang nhau.... nghề nghiệp không làm nhục con người.Chỉ những kẻ gian xảo chỉ biết sống bằng cách lường gạt,cướp giật....mới nhục.Làm chủ cũng có những khó khăn của chủ....làm công cũng có những sự vất vă của làm công, mổi người đều có hoàn cảnh khó khăn riêng...chuyện ở đời...vinh,nhục...chỉ là do người tạo.

Không phải là bênh thằng thun, nghề nào cũng OK hết, miễn là hỏng phải nghề trồng cỏ, nghề cao hay nghề thấp đều không có hèn hạ bằng nghề ăn cướp, trộm cắp. Ḿnh ko làm điều sai th́ ko sợ ǵ cả. Tuy nhiên, đừng v́ làm trốn thuế, có chút tiền th́ ra ngoài quăng lựu đạn văng miển bị thương người khác là không nên.
