The EU's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the Delta variant will "overtake" the Alpha variant, and is expected to account for 90% of Covid-19 cases in member countries.
Faced with the above risk, the European Union Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC) urged countries to promote vaccination. It is expected that by the end of August, the Delta variant (originating from India) will account for 90% of Covid-19 cases in the EU, according to AFP.
"It is very likely that the Delta variant will develop widely during the summer, especially among young people who are not yet vaccinated," said Andrea Ammon, head of the ECDC. According to Ms. Ammon, the Delta variant has more infectious than other strains. Currently, the Alpha variant first detected in the UK still accounts for the majority of cases.
Compared with the Alpha variant (B.1.1.7), the Delta variant (B.1.617.2) is 40-60% more contagious, the ECDC said.
The ECDC recommends that the deployment of the vaccine (especially the second shot) at "high speed is very important". In fact, the virus can still infect people who get vaccinated for the first time, Ammon said.
According to ECDC data, about 30% of citizens over the age of 80 and 40% of citizens over the age of 60 in the EU are still unvaccinated.
"The good news is that a two-dose injection, of any vaccine, can be highly protective," Ammon said.
The UK is also facing a wave of spread of the Delta variant, but the country is better protected by accelerating the vaccination campaign. In the UK, 82.5% of adults receive at least one dose of the vaccine, while 60% of adults are fully protected.
In addition, the ECDC also called on countries to be cautious in easing epidemic prevention measures to limit the spread of the virus, especially during the summer months.
"The number of hospitalizations and deaths is likely to reach similar levels in the fall of 2020, in the absence of additional action," the ECDC expressed concern.
First discovered in India, the World Health Organization (WHO) says the Delta variant has so far appeared in 85 countries and territories.
As of June 23, the world recorded more than 179.3 million cases of Covid-19, of which more than 4 million died. The number of recovered cases is 131.1 million (accounting for 73.1%), according to Reuters.
