The Vietnamese Embassy in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland on June 11 held a fund-raising ceremony in support of the national COVID-19 vaccine fund in Vietnam,

The ceremony was attended by officials and staff of representative Vietnamese missions, representatives of the Vietnamese Students Association and the Vietnamese community in the UK.

In his address, Ambassador Nguyen Hoang Long affirmed that amid the complex nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, pandemic prevention is not only the responsibility of the Vietnamese people at home but their compatriots studying, working and living overseas, including those in the UK.

He called on Vietnamese people in the UK, through their contact and relationships with friends and partners, make a practical contribution to the national COVID-19 vaccine fund, including the purchase of vaccines and technology transfer on vaccine production.

Launched on June 5, the fund has received donations from individuals and organisations at home and abroad, including Vietnamese communities in the US, Egypt, Mozambique, Cambodia, Thailand, Singapore, Laos, Germany, Russia, Switzerland, and many other countries.

Vietnam is said to need 150 million doses of vaccine to inoculate about 75 million people at an estimated cost of VND25.2 trillion (nearly US$1.1 billion).
